ACADEMIC STATUS POLICY

SECTION ONE: PURPOSE AND ALIGNMENT OF POLICY

1.01 Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to establish guidelines and procedures for students who are placed on academic probation and suspension at the College. The intent of this policy is  to ensure that students maintain satisfactory academic progress and to provide a structured framework for addressing academic deficiencies.

1.02 Alignment

This policy applies to all undergraduate students enrolled at Angelina College.

SECTION TWO: DEFINITIONS

At the end of each semester (fall, spring, and summer), academic records of all students will be evaluated according to the criteria specified in 2.02.

Academic Probation - Academic probation is a warning that a student is not making satisfactory academic progress as determined by their cumulative GPA and credit hours earned at the College. A student may still enroll and take classes based on the requirements in 3.01.

Academic Suspension - Academic suspension follows a probationary period and applies to students who have not met the minimum GPA requirements as specified in 4.01. Students are not allowed to register for classes while they are on academic suspension.

SECTION THREE: PROBATION AND SUSPENSION

3.01 Academic Probation

Students who fail to meet the satisfactory academic progress standards defined in 2.02 will be placed on academic probation for one semester. During probation, students must meet with an academic advisor to develop an academic improvement plan. Students that do not meet the minimum GPA requirements defined in 2.02 in a subsequent semester will be placed on academic suspension.

3.02 Academic Suspension

Students that fail to achieve the required satisfactory academic progress standards at the end of the probationary semester will be placed on academic suspension for one semester.  A student placed on academic suspension at the end of the semester will not be allowed to register for classes until the suspension period has ended. Students placed on suspension at the end of the fall semester cannot enroll again until the following summer semester; students placed on suspension at the end of the spring semester cannot enroll again until the following fall semester; students placed on suspension at the end of the summer semester cannot enroll again until the following spring semester.

3.03 Notification

Students are sent notification to their AC student email of the academic suspension at the end of the semester.  The notification includes information regarding the length of the suspension period and the process and deadlines to make an appeal.

SECTION FOUR: APPEAL PROCESS

4.01 Appeal Process

A student who wishes to be considered for re-enrollment before the suspension period has elapsed must file an appeal with the Academic Appeals Committee prior to the noted deadline. Students may appeal suspension one time. Upon receipt of the appeal, the committee will give the student an appointment to appear before the appeals committee to state their case.  The committee meets once each semester to hear appeals. After interviewing the student, the committee will review the appeal and the student’s record and will approve or deny the appeal. If the appeal is approved, the committee may recommend that a student enroll in certain courses. The term the student is allowed to re-enroll is considered a probationary semester. The student must use this probationary term to attempt to improve their GPA. The student must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 for each subsequent semester until which time the student has attained a career (cumulative) GPA of 2.0 and academic status is updated to good standing. Students that do not meet the minimum GPA in a subsequent semester will be returned to suspension status. If the appeal is denied the student will not be allowed to re-enroll for one semester.
